One of my earliest memories is receiving Castle Grayskull on my 5th birthday1. He-Man & the Masters of the Universe was my first real toy obsession, and the castle was the best part. It had the perfect mix of awesomeness and mystery, with just a hint of horror. Why did the heroes live in such a scary place? What dark secrets were kept inside? I spent a good portion of my childhood trying to figure this out.
When I got older, and had moved past battles with Skeletor over the fate of Eternia, the castle – which was in rough shape by this point – was given away along with many other toys my brother and I had outgrown. I’ve regretted that ever since.
Recently Mattel reissued the castle, and my parents gave it to me as a 43rd birthday present. It’s just as awesome now as it was 38 years ago.
